  1. To understand the role and development of international library and information associations and institutions,
  2. to be familiar with national library and information institutions,
  3. to understand comparative methodology as a process for study and research,
  4. to understand the political, socio-economic and cultural factors which shape the production, acquisition, access, dissemination and preservation of information, and
  5. to examine differences in the development of library and information institutions.
